Ruslana was honoured with the 2014 Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award

Ruslana becomes one of the 10 prize winners to be honored with the 2014 Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award

The singer has become the first Ukrainian whose courage was recognized by the Americans since the foundation of the award in 2007. First Lady Michelle Obama personally congratulated Ruslana and other women from around the world.

“When we see these women raise their voices, and move their feet and empower others to create change, we need to realize that each of us has that same power, and that same obligation”, Obama said at the State Department ceremony.

Ruslana:
“It is a big honor for me to be here today amongst all these women, each one of them representing the embodiment of courage and bravery. This award, undoubtedly means a lot to me, but each woman who stood on the Maidan and supported the protests, each woman who courageously helped our brothers under the gunfire, equally merits the title of the bravest. And I am certain, that this our common honor and victory.

I am hoping that receiving this award and my visit to Washington would allow me to attract maximum attention to the actual events taking place in Ukraine.

Tomorrow, I will take part in the meeting at the National Press Club alongside the representatives of the most influential media agencies in the United States, and for the next few days I will be holding a series of meetings with the civil and political activists of the USA. The world has to know the truth about Ukraine from primary sources. We have to talk with the world in an open, sincere and truthful manner in defiance of the floods of lies and dirty propaganda leaking out of toxic sources. We have nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to hide in our struggle for better life and for our dignity! Ukraine is open towards the world.

Glory to Ukraine!”

This year’s prize-winners include women from Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Fiji Islands, Saudi Arabia, Mali, India, Guatemala, Tajikistan and Georgia. A female bishop of the evangelical church, Rusudan Gotsiridze, was recognized as a courageous woman for her work in the field of religious tolerance, equal women’s rights and protection of all national minorities in Georgia.
